Today, we’re getting up close and personal with the NEW Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha. We’re talking unboxing, a fun print-then-cut project, and my honest, no-holds-barred review. First Impressions & What’s in the Box?

Let’s tear into this box, shall we? Inside, you’ll find your essential 12x12 cutting mat, tucked away in a cardboard tube with your power outlet, autoblade, adapter, and warranty info. And of course, the star of the show – the Cameo 5 Alpha machine itself!

Now, for my fellow former Cricut users or total Silhouette newbies, there’s a little something missing that might surprise you: a “get started” guide or even a QR code for beginners. Nope, none of that! So, you’ll be relying on your trusty internet friends (like me!) and the Silhouette website to guide your first steps. Don’t worry, I’ll link some great starting places in the description to help you out if you’re completely new.

Unboxing the Cameo 5 Alpha: A Peek Inside

Time to unveil this beauty! I absolutely adore how the top glides up effortlessly – it’s a real space-saver, no awkward flipping! As you open it, you’ll need to remove some blue tape and a couple of pieces of foam. Make sure to slide the print head to the left to access all the protective foam and film.

Design & Features I Love (and Some Missing Pieces)

• Adjustable Pinch Rollers: This is a big win! You can easily move the three right-side pinch rollers to customize your material placement. The left one is stationary, but the flexibility with the others is fantastic.
• Space-Saving Mat Feed: I love that the front remains open even when the lid is closed, allowing your mat to pass through smoothly without needing extra clearance.
• Unlockable Bottom Piece: The bottom piece can be unlocked and removed, which is perfect for attaching accessories like a vinyl roll holder.
• Power & Connectivity: The power outlet and button are conveniently on the right side. You’ll also find a USB port, but heads up – no USB cord is included in the box.
• Autoblade Installation: Installing the autoblade is a breeze. Just pull out the tab, slide the blade in, push it all the way down until it’s fully seated, and then click the tab back into place.
• Bluetooth Blinking Blue: Once powered up, you should see the blue Bluetooth light blinking. If it’s white, just give it a click to turn it on!

Getting Started with Silhouette Studio

Before you do anything else, you must have the correct software! If you don’t already have Silhouette Studio, make sure to download it. If you have an older version, update it to the very latest version immediately! The Cameo 5 Alpha will not be recognized by outdated software.

For those of you new to Silhouette, the software might seem a bit intimidating at first, but it does offer a beginner guide. You can choose “beginner” or “experienced” based on your comfort level. For this project, I’m choosing “experienced” so my starter mode is off.

Setting Up Your Page

First things first, click on “Design” and then “Page Setup.” This icon is the very first one on the right-side panel. This is where you’ll configure all your project settings.

First Project: Print Then Cut!

Now for the fun part – let’s do a print-then-cut project! This is where the magic truly happens, bringing your designs to life with precision cuts.

Software Settings for Print Then Cut

1. Page Setup Panel:

   • Machine: Select “Cameo 5.”
   • Cutting Mat: Choose “Cameo 12x12.”
   • Media Size: Set this to “Letter” (or whatever size paper you’re using).
   • Print Border & Cut Border: Turn these on. The print border shows you what will print, and the cut border shows what will cut. You want your design to fit within both.
   • Show Print Border & Show Cut Border: Ensure these are checked so you can visually confirm your layout.

2. Registration Marks:

   • Still in the Page Setup panel, go to the “Registration Marks” tab.
   • Style: Set this to “Type 1 (Cameo, Portrait, Curio).”
   • Invert: Leave this unchecked.
   • Length, Thickness, Inset: Adjust these as needed. I usually keep them around default but ensure they are not too close to my design. The Cameo 5 Alpha’s enhanced registration mark reading is fantastic, so you have a bit more flexibility here.
   • Make sure your design is within the red cut border and not touching the registration marks!

Printing Your Design

Once your design is perfectly placed and your registration marks are set, it’s time to print!

1. Go to File > Print.
2. Select your printer and make sure your print settings are correct (e.g., photo paper, best quality).
3. Print your design onto your chosen material.

Loading and Cutting with the Cameo 5 Alpha

1. Load Your Mat: Carefully place your printed design onto your cutting mat, aligning it precisely with the top-left corner guides.
2. Load into Machine: Slide your mat into the Cameo 5 Alpha, aligning it with the left edge. Make sure the pinch rollers are correctly positioned to hold your mat securely.
3. Send to Silhouette: In Silhouette Studio, click the “Send” tab.
4. Material Settings:
   • Select your material type (e.g., “White Sticker Paper”).
   • The software will suggest a blade depth, force, and passes. For a new machine, it’s always a good idea to do a test cut first!
   • Action: Choose “Cut.”
5. Send: Click “Send” to start cutting! The Cameo 5 Alpha will first scan the registration marks, then proceed with the cut.

Honest Review: Cricut vs Silhouette & My Thoughts

So, how does the Cameo 5 Alpha stack up, especially when we talk Cricut vs Silhouette?
